Aliens naughty or nice???


Hello, today lets talk about a topic that has been buzzing around on a few space science podcast Ive been listening to this last few day. The topic is Aliens naughty or nice? Yesterday i was listening to "StartTalk" with Dr. Neil De-Grass Tyson. He and his co-host were discussing the ways in which an Alien race might contact us and reasons why they would. One of the most realistic ways in which I believe we would be contacted was brought to us by the mighty cosmologist Carl Sagan in his Novel that was later evolved into a great scientifically correct movie called "Contact". In the book a very persistent (which is the only way one can describe a person willing to every day sit and scan every possible radio frequency known to man with her ears. Listening for any sign of a signal from a intelligent life form, hour after hour day by day year after year) who one day get her lucky break and discovers the find of the millennium a signal the is clearly from a intelligent life source. After careful evaluation of the signal video a underlining video recording is found underlining the audio signal and when they pick apart the video the find another layer of data containing tens of thousands of pages written data coded of course. Once they crack the code and figure in what order the pages go ( another cool fact is that the alien race is so smart and officiant that instead of arranging the pages like a book the are put together in cubes to fit even more data than humanly imaginably possible) they discover that the data is in fact detailed plans of how to build a massive portal to transport people (they have no idea where though, they can only assume its to a star "Vega" which is where the signal is eliminating from) so they build the device. Which is cool because the impact of being contacted by a interstellar intelligent alien race finally gives the proper motivation for the countries of the world to engage together in a peaceful project, with the prospect of the greater good of all humans in mind. So after much hard work this mega machine is created. Ok sorry i have to go to work i will finish this masterpiece later tonight so stay tuned there is so much more to cover and discuss, including the opinions of Professors, Steven Hawking, Brian Cox particle physicist, and Micho Coku and much . more!!!!!!!!!.................

Ok I'm back sorry it took so long I'm sure everyone has been on the edge of your seats, Ive had a few medical issues. Ok so the humans build the machine and the scientist who discovered the signal is eventually chosen to use the machine and travel to the source of the signal. After being transported through what the movie describes as a worm hole she appears on a beach of a world and is greeted by her dead father(they say its because its the from she would easiest be able to connect with) anyway the being tell her that this is just the first step in a long line of steps to evolve our species into a class 2 species. So the movie depicts this alien race as a "goodwill" species.

This is where Professor Hawking differs. he chooses to compare any would be visitor alien race as the early British and Spanish colonist. As they were more tech advanced they chose to exploit the indigenous peoples for all they could. Hawking believes that this is the way it naturally is across the board across the universe or universes. we will get into multiple universes in a later post.
As for Professor Micho he says that anything is possible and it could go either way. He defines the the different classes of species. for example the professor says that currently humans are at a tier 1 which means that we are guided mainly by greed and use non renewable resources and communicate through what he deems primitive means. Where as a tier 2 species is defined as communicating with out sound or taking just using thoughts or just our minds. also the we will have put renewable resources as our main consumption because we will finally get it through our heads that we must be able to tap and use things that will last and wont hurt us at the same time!!! Dr de-grass talks about how there is just no possible way that there isnt any other life in our universe because he cannot fathom such a waste of space and frankly neither can I. well that does it for this post let me know if i need to be corrected on anything or if you wish to add to the conversation until next time keep looking up!!

The great ISS


One really good place to get new and interesting news about whats going on in space science Universetoday.com they have many stories about discoveries on the space frontier that not your everyday person would even know about and as with this particular article some every much special is being talked about. The International space represents coming together of many countries working together for the good of all the nations involved to gain data efficiently and sharing the cost. It is ideas and practices like this that is needed for our species as a whole to evolve into a type 2 species, which means we will take renewable energy from the world around us instead of draining our planet of fossil fuels and such. Most readers of Universe Today are familiar with the International Space Station or “ISS” as it’s often referred to. But just in case you are visiting our site for the first time, the ISS is a huge space station orbiting Earth that serves as an orbital laboratory, factory, testing ground and home; crew members conduct experiments from biology to astronomy, including experiments for prolonged exposure to life in space for future missions to the Moon and beyond.
The ISS is major accomplishment for NASA (US), ESA (Europe), JAXA (Japan) CSA (Canada) and all the countries involved (16 in all). The space station is just over 72 m long by 108 m wide and 20 m high; it is maintained at an orbital altitude of between 330 km (205 mi) and 410 km (255 mi) and travels at an average speed of 27,724 kilometres (17,227 mi) per hour, completing 15.7 orbits per day.


One of the best things about the ISS is that you can see it with your own eyes from Earth! It’s very easy to watch the International Space Station pass over your own backyard!
All you need to do is understand when the ISS is going to be passing over your location and where to look for it in the sky. You can check this by using an ISS pass predictor app or website such as Heavens-Above.


Once you have found out when the ISS will pass over your location, all you need to do a few minutes before the pass is go outside and start looking in the right direction of the sky.
The International Space Station always passes over starting from a westerly part of the sky, but not always from the same point. It can be low on the horizon for some passes and very high others. Most of the apps or websites will tell you what direction in the sky the pass will start and end and how many degrees above the horizon the starting and ending points are. Also included are the highest altitude the ISS will be. For example, if the maximum elevation is listed as somewhere between 74-90 degrees above the horizon, the ISS will be passing almost straight overhead (Just like you learned in geometry, 90 degrees would be straight up). If you aren’t sure about where to look, a good rule of thumb is that your fist outstretched at arm’s length is 10 degrees. If the ISS will be first be seen 40 degrees above the horizon, look four fist-lengths above the horizon. Check apps and websites for where and what track the ISS will take on each individual pass.
When the station passes over it will travel from a westerly direction, heading in an easterly direction. An average good pass can last about 5 minutes.
The ISS looks like an incredibly bright, fast-moving star and can be mistaken for an aircraft. However, the ISS has no flashing lights and it can be much brighter. It seemingly just glides across the sky.
Short passes can last a few seconds to a few minutes and you can see the international space station slowly move into the Earth’s shadow, good bright passes will show the ISS moving across the sky from horizon to horizon.

The International Space Station usually takes around 90 minutes to orbit our planet, so if you’re really lucky you can get two, or maybe even three or four passes in an evening or morning.
Not only can you see the ISS in the evening but you can also see it in the mornings as both the ISS and Sun are in the ideal position to illuminate the spacecraft at this time. The light we see from the ISS is reflected sunlight.
You can’t watch the ISS pass over during the middle of the day because in the daytime the sky is too bright (although some people with specialized equipment have seen it) and you cannot see the space station in the middle of the night, as it is in the Earth’s shadow and no light is being reflected from it.
The position that the ISS will be in the sky changes every night. The space station does not take the same track or orbital path for each orbit and this change provides good visible passes roughly every 6 weeks in each location on Earth.
Occasionally if a spacecraft such as a Soyuz crew capsule or a Progress resupply vehicle has been sent to the ISS, you will see objects preceding or trailing the station as it moves across the sky. These can either be very close to the station or the distance between the objects can be measured in minutes. Seeing the ISS is an incredible sight! Just remember there are people on board that fast moving point of light!

the Radio and Astronomy


Hello and welcome back! lets talk about radio for a min. OK we all know all about radio signals right? they are widely used all over the world and have been for a long time, to transfer sounds and other communications publicly and by the military in war times. Now days we use them in car cell phones you name it. What you might not know is how radio is used every day to study the cosmos and has made ground breaking discoveries. And you might not know the use of radio signals to servey the universe was discovered by complete accident!

Karl Jansky: Is credited with "discovering" the first radio waves coming from astronomical objects. While working for Bell Labs on a project concerned with transatlantic telephone service, he experimented with "short waves" (roughly 10-20 meters), and encountered some interference, which he researched more by building a large antennae on a rotating dish, thus allowing him to discover the directional source of the interference. Jansky discovered the source of the interference to be two types of thunderstorms (small and large) and another unrecognizable type, which later was discovered to be radio waves emitted from the Milky Way. He wanted to research further into these cosmic waves, but was not able to because Bell was not interested, they had found out all they needed from his research relating to transatlantic radio communication. http://www.brighthub.com/science/space/articles/40999.aspx

Grote Reber: Built his own radio telescope after learning of Jansky's discoveries at Bell Labs. Reber tried to get hired at Bell and at other places but it was during the Great Depression and no one was really hiring.

John Kraus: A contemporary of Jansky and Reber, Kraus designed and built a radio telescope at Ohio State University in the 1950's for approximately $250,000 dollars, with the help of graduate and undergraduate students. The telescope still survives and is called the "Big Ear." Kraus also wrote a book titled "Radio Astronomy," published 1966, which is called the "bible" for the field of radio astronomy. Kraus, deceased in 2004, was also interested in discovering extraterrestrial intelligence.

Largest Radio Telescope on Earth: Arecibo Observatory located in Puerto Rico, which is run by Cornell University in conjunction with the National Science Foundation. The diameter of the dish is 305 meters, the depth is 167 feet, and it covers an area of roughly 20 acres.

The enormous dish of the Arecibo Observatory. The reflector is suspended 450 feet above the dish and weighs roughly 900 tons; suspending this platform are large cables strung from the reinforced concrete pillars, one 365 feet tall, the other two 265 feet tall.

Noteworthy Discoveries: The most well known discovery of radio astronomy was the discovery of the cosmic microwave background; other discoveries include radio galaxies, pulsars and masers.

Notable Facts, Information Relating to Radio Astronomy: Of the ten astronomers who have won the Nobel Prize in Physics, six of them used radio telescopes for their work. And for a bit of advocacy for radio astronomy and radio pollution, one major issue that radio astronomy faces and could continue to face in exponentially exacerbated conditions, is that of radio interference. Just as optical astronomy can be blinded or saturated because of different kinds of interference, radio astronomy faces all kinds of interference from various sources of radio transmission; which interference, because the radio waves from astronomical objects are relatively very faint given the distance of their sources, and the telescopes made to be highly sensitive, can appear very strong, nearly overwhelming the astronomical information.

Well i believe it is more than fair to say that without the radio media and one lucky scientist that we would not have radio astronomy and wouldn't be able to find additional data outside what we can detect in light waves.
